Ahangama, Southern Province. If you've driven the coastal road through Ahangama lately, you'll have noticed something new rising between the surf schools and rice paddies. Banana Republic, part open-air nightclub, part tropical playground, opened its doors on 14 March 2026, and it's immediately one of the most ambitious entertainment venues on Sri Lanka's south coast.
Built for crowds of 1,000-plus, the venue mixes container architecture, bamboo, neon signage, and a stage setup designed squarely for international-calibre DJ sets. Think Tulum-meets-southern-Sri-Lanka energy.
But a venue this size, outdoors, on the coast, requires serious infrastructure. That's where JDN Online came in.
The lighting rig
JDN Online designed, supplied, and installed the complete professional lighting system to ensure Banana Republic's launch was spectacular:
- 3x 14R moving head beam lights: High-powered (295W) units mounted on the upper level, throwing sharp beams that cut across the night sky above the crowd.
- 10x LED par lights: Positioned across stage and ground level, washing the performance area and bar in vivid purple, blue, and red colour.
- Wireless DMX system: We used a DMX 384 controller with 1 transmitter and 9 receivers to make the entire lighting control wireless, eliminating the hassle of using XLR signal cables across the venue.

Why wireless matters
Running traditional DMX cables across an outdoor beachside venue is a headache nobody needs: weather exposure, trip hazards through a crowd, cables snaking across a tropical setting.
JDN's solution was a fully wireless DMX rig. Every fixture on the system operates without a single signal cable touching the ground. It's the kind of setup that's becoming standard at serious outdoor venues across the region.
Engineering and professional consultation
At JDN, we know that professional lighting requires more than just dropping off equipment. It demands structural safety and precise engineering.
During our initial site consultation, our technical team collaborated closely with the venue's owners to design the optimal mounting solution. Because three 14R units total 39kg of high-powered lighting hanging above a dance floor, standard mounting wouldn't suffice.
Our team implemented a custom 30mm heavy-duty steel pipe welded across two structural columns, reinforced with three strategic weld points, including a critical centre support to prevent deflection under load. This kind of structural problem-solving and rigorous safety standard is what commercial partners expect from JDN Online.

A coast that's growing up
Banana Republic is part of a wave of purpose-built entertainment venues popping up along Sri Lanka's southern coastline. As the south coast tourism scene matures, these venues need professional-grade systems that work outdoors, look spectacular, and are built to last.
JDN Online works with venue owners, event companies, and production teams across Sri Lanka, from single-fixture setups to full venue buildouts. Consultation, supply, installation, and ongoing support.
