Common Questions About Light Controllers

What is DMX and why do I need a controller?Expand
DMX512 is the standard protocol for controlling stage lighting. A DMX controller lets you control each light's color, brightness, movement, and effects from one console. Without one, your lights run in basic auto or sound-activated mode. With DMX, you get full control over your entire light show.
How many lights can a 192-channel DMX controller handle?Expand
A 192-channel controller supports up to 12 lights with 16 channels each, or more lights if they use fewer channels. For example: 12 PAR lights (8 channels each) = 96 channels used, leaving room for more. Most standard setups of 8-15 lights work well with this controller.
What is wireless DMX and how does it work?Expand
Wireless DMX replaces the physical DMX cable between your controller and lights with a radio signal. You connect a wireless transmitter to your controller, and wireless receivers to each light (or group of lights). The signal passes through walls and works up to 400m in open space. This eliminates cable runs and makes setup much faster.
Can I use wireless DMX with my existing wired setup?Expand
Yes! Wireless DMX is fully compatible with standard DMX512. Simply add a wireless transmitter to your existing controller's DMX output, and wireless receivers at your lights. You can even mix wired and wireless in the same setup: some lights on cables, others wireless.
Do I need a controller if my lights have sound-activated mode?Expand
Sound-activated mode is great for simple party setups where all lights react to music automatically. But if you want specific colors, timed scene changes, synchronized movements, or professional show control, you need a DMX controller. Most professional DJs and event companies use controllers for consistent shows.
